The excavation of Oplontis was no longer discussed for more than a century, until a committee of local enthusiasts managed to bring attention to the site.

Ten years of excavations brought to light a building that had 90 rooms spread over 10.000 square meters.

Built on a tall cliff overlooking the sea, the Villa of Oplontis could be reached by covered pathways, porticoes,

terraces with lookout points and gardens built on different levels. 

Oplontis is the renowned site where stands the Villa of Poppea Sabina, Nerone's wife, and it's on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

It is a monumental residence, unique in the world, with decorations so sumptuous that may be attributed 

to the imperial family .

The eruption of 79 AD helped to preserve, together with the architectural structure, the original frescoes decoration, like no other archaeological site.
